Exterior Paint Options for Your Home

Exterior Paint Options for Your Home

Choosing the right paint for the exterior of your home is not a decision to be undertaken lightly. Exterior paint is your home’s first defense against the elements. There are many options to choose from when deciding on an exterior paint option for your home. In this article, we’ll go over them and provide you with the information you need to make an educated decision in picking exterior paint for your home.

Oil-based paint

One of the important things to note is that many homes, especially older ones, have been painted with an oil-based paint. Oil-based paint has a slow drying time. It can take up to 48 hours to dry. It also has a strong odor and is messy to clean and work with. Bugs and rain can cause potential problems for this type of paint. However, many still use it.

Latex paint

This does not mean that you are stuck with an oil-based paint if your home was previously painted with oil-based paint.  You can change your exterior paint to a more durable latex. Compared to oil-based paints, a top quality exterior latex paint has better color retention and chalk resistance. They look good for years and do not get brittle like oil paints do. Latex paints also dry faster than oil-based paints taking no more than six hours to dry. This allows you to quickly apply a second coat.

Acrylic exterior paint

Acrylic exterior paint is a type of latex. It’s water-thinned and dries even faster than regular latex. It covers just about any type of building material. That includes masonry and properly primed metal. It’s less likely to form mildew and maintain a fresh appearance for longer.

Alkyd paint

Alkyds are solvent-thinned, synthetic resin exterior paints. It has many of the same properties of oil-based paints. However, it dries more rapidly. It goes well over old oil paint and you don’t have to scrape it all off like you would if you were applying a latex over an oil-based paint. It has an excellent coverage.

The truth is that any of these four options could work for your exterior paint. You have decide what you want to use and what works best for your home’s exterior.
